MLB Trade Deadline: Postseason Impact

By George Economus

As the trade deadline approaches, major deals are being made and rumors are circling the league.

So far two major deals have been made that will impact potential World Series contenders.

  1. Adam Climber and Brad Hand (Padres to Indians) for Francisco Mejia (Indians to Padres): The Cleveland Indians have one of the most complete teams in baseball they have a great starting lineup featuring 3 all-stars: Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Michael Brantley, an amazing rotation featuring Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, all-star Trevor Bauer, and solid starter Carlos Carrasco. The one thing they struggled with so far this year is their bullpen. Andrew Miller has been out for a majority of the year and the Indians have really not had any other pitchers who they could rely on. After making this move, the Indians added an all-star reliever and a solid rookie who has performed well so far this year in hopes to help their struggling bullpen. The Padres, on the other hand, are not having a good year and are looking to rebuild and started that by picking up the switch-hitting catcher and one of baseball’s top prospects.
  2. Manny Machado (Orioles to LA Dodgers) for 5 Prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers are the winners of the Manny Machado Sweepstakes picking up on of the best shortstops and overall players in the game. The Dodgers are currently leading the NL West by .5 games and adding Machado may be the key to securing the division. The Orioles, however, have the worst record in baseball. They are in full rebuild mode by dealing the shortstop for 5 prospects: outfielder Yusniel Diaz, RHP Dean Kremer, third baseman Rylan Bannon, RHP Zach Pop, and third baseman Breyvic Valera. The Orioles saw they could not win with only Machado and now they decided to take another approach in trying to be relevant again.

The Indians seem like a lock for the postseason at this point and adding two solid relievers will help them in their quest for a World Series Pennant. The Dodgers are trying to secure a spot in the playoffs and adding a top player in the league will help give them a better chance.
