Top 25 players in the MLB right now

The 2019 MLB season is set to begin this month, and now that Bryce Harper has signed all we have to do now is wait. This season will be filled with high flying home runs, and lots of action from some of the leagues best players.  Here is how the top players in baseball stack up as of now.

1-5

  • Mike Trout
  • Mookie Betts
  • Nolan Arenado
  • Jacob deGrom
  • Jose Altuve

This first group of players have combined for four out of the last 5 AL MVP’s and an additional Cy Young award.  Trout, Betts, Arenado, and Altuve are all as good as it gets in terms of position players.  They are all legitimate five tool players who can do just about anything you ask of them.  The first pitcher on the top 25 list is Jacob deGrom who had a phenomenal 2018 season, posting a 1.70 ERA.  deGrom has always been a number one pitcher, but last season he took his game to the next level.  I expect another outstanding season from deGrom yet again this year.

6-10

  • Francisco Lindor
  • Max Scherzer
  • Christian Yelich
  • JD Martinez
  • Aaron Judge

This second group of players features some of the best home run hitters in the game.  Martinez has been one of the most consistent hitting threats from the DH spot over the last 5 years.  Aaron Judge is always a forced to be reckoned with when healthy, and Christian Yelich is the most recent NL MVP who hit 36 homeruns last season.  The second pitcher featured on this list is Max Sherzer who has been the Washington Nationals ace for 4 seasons now, and has never had an ERA over 3.00 as a National.

11-15

  • Manny Machado
  • Jose Ramirez
  • Freddie Freeman
  • Paul Goldschmidt
  • Alex Bregman

This group of corner infielders can really do it all.  Over the past five years these have been some of the most consistent corner infielders in the league.  All five of these guys can hit for both power and average, while also playing the field at a high level.  Paul Goldschmidt joining the Cardinals and Manny Machado joining the Padres will make a huge impact across the MLB.  Freddie Freeman is as underrated a player as you will find.  All he has done for the Atlanta Braves is hit .300 with 25+ home runs.

16- 20

  • Chris Sale
  • Bryce Harper
  • Anthony Rendon
  • Justin Verlander
  • Corey Kluber

This fourth group of players features two outstanding position players (including the $330 million man Bryce Harper) squeezed in between three of the games top aces.  Both Sale and Verlander have had great success throughout their career, and 2019 will not change that.  Kluber has been the ace for the Cleveland Indians, one of the top teams in the AL, for a short stint now and is looking to have another great year.  Bryce Harper has recently signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and will make a huge impact there, as they immediately become a contender to make a world series push.

21-25

  • Giancarlo Stanton
  • Joey Votto
  • Clayton Kershaw
  • Blake Snell
  • Justin Turner

The final group of this ranking features two more pitchers, the second DH on the list, and two outstanding position players.  Although Stanton’s 2018 was a let down from his phenomenal 2017 campaign, I expect him to have a bounce back year.  You know you are a good player when a down year is hitting .265 and 38 homeruns.  Snell had a breakout season in 2018, winning the AL Cy Young and posting a sub 2.00 ERA.  He is one of the most underrated stars the game has today.  Speaking of underrated, Justin Turner and Joey Votto do not get the credit they deserve as legitimate MLB stars.  Both can hit for average and for power and are consistently top performing position players.
