There’s No Need to Worry About Nevada

The Nevada Wolf Pack had a lot of hype around them coming into the season and they’ve lived up to it for most of the season.  However, they’ve run into a couple of speed bumps in the form of road losses against San Diego State and Utah State.  Since these losses Nevada has dropped to #17 in the AP Poll and people are questioning how good the Wolf Pack really is.

Mid Majors That Could Be Dangerous in the NCAA Tournament

First off, I don’t consider the American Conference a mid-major and obviously I’m not going to write about Gonzaga, Nevada, Buffalo, and Wofford.  Those four will all make the tournament with a top 8 seed barring something crazy.  However, some of these teams may sadly not end up in the tournament. But if they do, I think they could do some damage.

VCU

The Rams are no stranger to upsets in the tournament so this year wouldn’t be anything new. VCU has KenPom’s #4 defense that is allowing just 62 points per game.  They do have a lackluster offense but they have won 9 games in a row and have wins over Temple, Hofstra, Texas, and Dayton (twice), and close losses to St. John’s and Virginia.  They’ve held good offenses like Texas and Virginia to under 60 points.  VCU could easily shut teams down and win a couple games in the tournament.

The Duke Blue Devils take on the North Carolina Tar Heels tonight in the newest chapter in one of the best rivalries in sports.  Duke has the most talked about team in my lifetime and probably one of the most talked about teams of all time.  North Carolina is ranked 8th and has a chance to move into a tie for first place in the ACC with who else but the Blue Devils.  So, a huge rivalry, two great teams, two legendary coaches, one of the most hyped and unique prospects college basketball has seen, and now we have the most hyped game of the college basketball season so far, tickets selling for thousands of dollars, and celebrities like Barack Obama and Todd Gurley in attendance.  This game will be exciting. College Basketball Power Rankings After a Month: Kansas is the New Number One with Tennessee Right Behind

1. Kansas

Kansas has looked great so far and is in my opinion the best team in the nation right now.  They have beaten Michigan State and Tennessee, two top-10 teams, at neutral sites and have a good win over Marquette.  Lagerald Vick and Dedric Lawson are stars and so is Udoka Azubuike, when he’s on the floor.  Azubuike is playing just about 20 minutes per game right now, sixth on the team, mostly due to foul trouble.  Quentin Grimes and Devon Dotson have looked really good and actually play a fairly similar style.  Kansas is in the top 7 in KenPom adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency and do just about everything well.  Stanford took them to overtime last Saturday but Lagerald Vick carried Kansas to a win and the Jayhawks stayed perfect.  Kansas’ next big game is December 15th against Villanova.
