The Big East was one of the best conferences in the country last year, if not the best. They produced two number one seeds, Xavier and Villanova, and Villanova went on to defeat Michigan in the National Championship game. Six Big East teams made the tournament. The problem is many of these teams lost a lot of talent. The Big East Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Freshman of the Year are all no longer in the conference. The Buckeyes ended last season with a 90-84 loss to Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA tournament. They were one of the biggest surprise teams in the nation last season finishing 25-9 and 15-3 in conference play. They were projected by every major sports news outlet to finish in at best the bottom third of the Big Ten. They ended up finishing third in the conference. Everyone remembers the most remarkable upset in college basketball history. UMBC dominated the Virginia Cavaliers 74-54 and became the first 16-seed to ever beat a 1-seed, essentially erasing Virginia’s entire season. The Cavaliers were 31-3 and 17-1 in the toughest conference in America. They won the ACC regular season and tournament championship.
